A Home Business For You? - Part Two It's easy to procrastinate when you know the office is right in your home. When I was in college, I had an art professor who accused some of us in his class of playing the "Toilet Bowl Game." He said, "You want to start painting but you don't have your brushes. So you go downstairs and get your brushes, then oops, you don't have the easel up. So you put that up, then oops, your paint is out in the car. You go out to the car, bring the paint in and oops, you’re thirsty, so you go the 'fridge and get a Coke, then oops, your favorite TV show is on, so you go and watch it. Now you're ready to paint and, wow, you forgot what the assignment was, so you get your notebook and find the assignment. You're finally ready to start painting but oops, you have to go to the bathroom!! Sound familiar? (Thanks to Jonathan Fink.) You can easily play the “Toilet Bowl Game” if you work at home. You have all that laundry waiting because you went camping this past weekend. You see some dust on the coffee table. Maybe you should do that before you start in the office. Your girlfriend calls and asks you to meet her for lunch today. You've got to get the rain gutters up, etc., etc. It's very tempting to putter around the house. After all, you're the boss, and you set your own hours, right? Motivation is another requirement of any home business. You must be passionate about what you're doing, love the work itself, and pat yourself on the back for what you've accomplished every day to stay motivated. I have a trick I use when my motivation needs a push. It’s a kind of reward system where I tell myself, "Write 1,000 words and then you can get a cup of coffee." or "If you edit three chapters, you can go out for a short walk to clear your head." This personal challenge to get going has brought results for me for many years. I get my work done, and I get my "perks," too! I also celebrate when a particularly difficult or big project is done. I treat my husband and me to a dinner out and perhaps a movie. This keeps my motivation level high most of the time. Record keeping is another hurdle. Uncle Sam still requires your numbers whether you're at home or not. I use a software program called QuickBooks¨ and it has simplified my life, my income taxes, and day-to-day bookkeeping. You'll need to set up a daily, weekly, and monthly posting schedule and accept no excuses from yourself! Be sure to bill out your work as soon as it is complete. Don’t throw the file in a pile for billing when you can get to it. The sooner you bill, the sooner you will be paid. Cash flow is directly related to record keeping. I will address the details of record keeping in a future article, but understand that the software available today leaves no room for excuses! Your organization style is another important issue you should consider when working at home. Whether you have a corner of the dining room or an entire basement devoted to your business, how you organize your files, your equipment, and your schedule will, in most cases, have a strong impact on your bottom line. A well-organized and well-run business means you will not waste time looking for files or finding your notes on that last project. Time is money—no matter where you work. The most difficult aspect of operating a home business is the lack of a regular paycheck. Uh oh, now I've hit a nerve. Yes, no weekly paycheck. Not unless you are fortunate to hold a regular position with a company who hires home workers. This is rare, as most home workers are freelancers, entrepreneurs, Internet biz operators, or short-term contractors. If you are doing the type of work that requires you sell yourself constantly, looking for work all the time, then you must do it. The best time to look for new work is when you are busy working, so by the time the current job is done, your next job slides into place. Sounds ideal, and it is, but you might experience a few bumpy spots here and there the first year or so. Be prepared for this, and have plans in place to work on personal marketing or organization projects, or learn how to operate new software during the slow times. The test of your suitability for running a home-based business is how well you weather the tough times when you're in between assignments. But I know you've taken all this into account before quitting your day job! I hope you will consider all these issues before moving home to work. I love the flexibility and freedom of this kind of arrangement and wouldn't have it any other way. I wouldn't trade my home office overlooking a cobalt blue lake in northern Maine for any other workplace. I am grateful, too, for the technology that makes it possible to work at home. How fortunate are we to have such a choice? Happy home bizzin'! *****************************************************
