WE
ONLY ACCEPT ELECTRONIC RESUMES
Have you ever felt youve been discriminated against because
you dont have an electronic resume?
Have
you ever called about an open position to be told, please email
your resume? We do not accept faxes or mailed resumes! This is
becoming more and more the norm for companies across the United
States. It appears that companies have had to chooseeither
hire a secretary to file paper or hire a database administrator
to input information. This person would have excellent computer
skills. Having both kinds of people in a company is rare. It is
no longer cost effective to get paper resumes. So folks, if you
do not have your resume in an electronic formatget one.
Be able to compete. At least be able to submit your information
for consideration in a format that will make it very easy to find
you. Wouldnt it be a shame to be overlooked for an interview
because a company or recruiter didnt have the manpower to
go through thousands of resumes to find you. Also it may keep
you from being disqualified because you appear to lack computer
knowledge. Even if the position you are applying for is not at
all computer related, companies like to hire candidates who keep
up with what is happening in the world today and are forward looking.
It is always a good idea to be considered someone who lives in
todays world and is prepared to look forward to tomorrow
rather than someone who is holding fast to the past.
Today
companies, human resource departments, staffing and recruiting
firms usually have some sort of database where they store incoming
resumes. These databases may be in a word format in something
as simple as Excel or in a database that costs many thousands
of dollars. These databases allow companies quick and painless
access to candidates and their resumes instantly upon entering
a name or skill set or even a company name if they are seeking
someone from a particular firm.
When
you submit a paper resume; it is normally coded when someone has
the time and filed into a drawer in a file cabinet. This is a
file cabinet which already houses thousands of resumes from other
candidates.
A
company may be searching for a candidate with your particular
qualifications and skills. This company has an electronic database.
It also has a few file cabinets full of resumes filed alphabetically
by name. They will go to the electronic database and simply type
in the qualifications they are seeking and everyone with those
qualifications will automatically pop up for viewing. On the other
hand, someone will have to go through all of the filed resumes
and read each one to find those people who are qualified. The
time differentiation is phenomenal between the two. Lets
hope this company also has its paper resumes filed in another
location according to discipline and type of last employment (this
would mean that someone has had to copy, collate and staple your
information for distribution.). If you are not currently seeking
the same type of employment as you have had in the past, it will
not have you listed and you will be overlooked in the process.
If
you dont own a computer, go to your local library, take
a floppy disc with you or purchase one there and type your resume
for distribution. Then go to the websites of companies you are
interested in working for and submit your resume for review. You
may also have a list of email addresses you need to submit your
resume to.
If
youre not computer literate and wish to be considered for
all positionscontact someone who is able to perform this
service for you. Typing a resume can be a painful chore for someone
who is not used to typing a lot. Time is of value to you. If you
feel your time would be better spent doing something you consider
worthwhile, perhaps you should contact someone who enjoys typing
and working on the Internet. You may contact Joyce at Recruitshop
at 724 772-1149, she will take your resume and type it for you
in an electronic format and submit it for you to several (3) major
websites which you choose for a one-time charge of $25.00. For
$50, she will research the web for the types of positions you
are seeking and submit your resume for each position you have
reviewed and ask to be submitted to. If you are interested in
applying with recruiters nationwide who specialize in your type
of employment, you may have her submit to a list of those contacts.
You would receive a full listing of all companies and/or recruiters
who have received your credentials through Recruitshop. This is
an easy solution for those of us who are not computer savvy or
simply dont have the time to spend in front of a computer
screen. It is also a service that is rare to find. It is my understanding
that this service is available within 24 hours of your conversation.
Feel free to fax your information directly to her at 208-247-5056
or mail it to Recruitshop/PO Box 2015/Cranberry Twp., PA 16066
and then call to discuss your preferences.

DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO FREELANCE OFFSITE OR ONSITE Deciding to work onsite or offsite sounds like a relatively simple decision, but it's actually one which isn't easy to make. Sure, when you're lying in bed just after the alarm has gone off and you see that it's raining outside and all you wish was that you could go back to bed for ten minutes and then do your freelance work from home, working offsite sounds ideal. But there are as many cons to the offsite work job as there are pros and you need to weigh them carefully when making the decision about whether to work onsite or offsite.

IS FREELANCING RIGHT FOR YOU? Freelancing, a term introduced by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), is when you work without being committed to an employer. With development of internet and communication technology, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people going their own way and leaving behind the cubicles. You are reading this book, so you must be contemplating becoming a freelancer, but before you make your move there are a few things to consider.

FREELANCER'S GUIDE TO TIME MANAGEMENT The most common problem that freelancers face is figuring out the balance between work and the rest of life. While there are a few freelancers out there who don't work as much as they need to in order to pay their bills and improve their business, most freelancers have the opposite problem - they work ALL the time. And that's why there are a great number of freelancers who "burn out" after a short (or if they're lucky, a long) time. In order to make sure that you aren't one of those people who "used to freelance but got burned out", you need to set limits on how much you work. Then you need to stick to those limits.
