WHY EVERY SMALL BUSINESS NEEDS TO NETWORK

I am sure there has been a time when you received a request you couldn't fill. What did YOU do with that request?

1. Did you throw away the request without responding, figuring why waste your time?

2. Or maybe you did respond. You apologized for not having what they were looking for, and sent them information on what you have to offer.

If you did the first one, you didn't make or lose anything. You are an average business person. That's fine if you not looking to get ahead, or make money for that matter.

If you did the second one, you probably just wasted your money. If you sent something that wasn't related to their request, then you wasted your time and money. That is a big mistake.

What you should have done is referred them to someone else. Why? Why not! If you can't make a sale, give it to someone who can. Who can you send them to? How about your customers. What better way to thank them, than with some new customers.

I try my best to find out what my customers do. Why? Well for a number of reasons. One, to help refer other people who I can not help. The other reason, what if I need their services. Why go to someone else. Working and helping each other is what business is all about.

Look at it this way. If I referred someone to you, and you make a sale, wouldn't you continue to do business with me. Of course you would. Free leads, what could be better than that. Even if no one makes a sale, the gesture alone will increase your business. People will always remember what you did, and that kind of advertising you can not buy.

Don't forget about the person who asked for the request. They may still do business with you in the future. A business that goes beyond the customers expectations, is a business worth doing business with.

So go update your files. Besides it's good business to be interested in your customers business. You could say, it's good business etiquette. Don't take the money and run. Networking is one of the keys to building a successful business.
