STARTING YOUR FREELANCE CAREER - Any Time is the Right Time

By Marilyn Crain

Can I start a freelance career at 25? Did I wait too long to begin? I'm 50--is it too late? Would-be freelance professionals frequently ask questions related to age. Am I too old? Too young? What is the "right" age? The answer is a resounding yes and no.

Yes, you can start a freelance career at any age. No, it is not too early or too late to consider freelancing.

Some freelance writers and artists start their careers as children. Actually there are many opportunities for very young aspiring freelancers. With a little help from parents, teachers or guidance counselors these youngsters can begin to build portfolios. Contests abound. Many Web sites and magazines accept only works from children and teens. The experience of not only doing the work, but also interacting with professionals is priceless and will help lay a strong foundation for the future.

College students can put into real life practice what they are learning in the classroom. Many students have started lifelong careers by contributing to campus organizations or finding innovative ways to help pay for their education.

College graduates face a crossroads--whether to take a full-time job and work for someone else or to just jump in and start their freelance work. There are advantages to be found in either scenario. Therein is the dilemma and the adventure.

Some freelancers choose to work full-time for a short time or in some cases, for many years. Whether leaving a full-time job is by choice or not, venturing out on one's own can be an exciting and energizing experience. This second career can be even more fulfilling than the first.

Then there are those who choose to work full-time and retire, not to a life of leisure, but to a new, exciting life as a freelance professional. In today's world we can make such choices and be taken very seriously. The experience from years spent in the business world will surely enrich a new freelance career. And for those who find themselves needing to supplement their "retirement" income, freelance work offers very desirable options.

So you see, the question is not if you are the right age to start a freelance career, but do you have what it takes to embark on this rewarding way of life. Only you can decide, after counting the cost, if you have the drive and tenacity to give it a try.
