Making supplemental cash while freelancing -- You can do it!

By Lori Tate

While you're looking for freelancing work, it may be difficult to find money to pay the bills.

With the information in this article, you may be able to find additional sources of income! Here's how:

Think outside the box.

What other talents do you have? For example, although my freelancing talents are writing and reseaching, I'm also a janitor, babysitter and tarot card reader.

Let other people know you're looking.

You know all those people you told about your freelancing business? Now go back to them, explain your other talents, and ask if they have any job opportunities or ideas for you.

Be flexible.

When you hear of a job you could do, don't dismiss it, because you think you don't have time. Get your family to help, and all sorts of extra hours could appear.

Consider the money.

What do the extra jobs pay? What will it cost for uniforms, child care, transportation, and other expenses? Will it be worth it to work?

Have a goal.

What will you spend the extra money on? Having a goal you can work towards may make working more fun.

Get out there.

Attend meetings and social gatherings whenever you can. For example, I attend church functions and MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meetings several times a month, therefore expanding my base of people who I can talk to about possible jobs.

Consider part-time.

There are several part-time opportunities out there, including working in food service, retail (especially around the holidays), or working for a temporary agency, one that sends you to jobs that usually last from a day to several months. You can find such agencies in the Yellow Pages.

Volunteer.

Volunteering lets you get familiar with a company, and also shows your employer how responsible you are. You also may hear about paid jobs before anyone else.

It may take time to find the right mix of jobs, but if you stay alert, something will come to you. Hang in there, and remember, you can do this!
