Assessing the Unknown Factor on Freelance Projectsby Diego Botello When working on a new freelance project you will frequently find yourself in the situation that you already have experience developing part of it, and that there is other part that you have never worked with. Maybe there is a visual effect your customer want in Photoshop that you have never done so you will have to research on ways of making it. Or maybe it is some kind of code that you have never done, you have the idea of how to make it, but will have to test it first, and we all know that sometimes this tests don’t work as expected. So
you will face the dilemma, how much to charge for something
that you don’t know how much is going to cost you to
make. In that cases you have to make an estimate of the time
it will take you finding the solution. For example if you
charge 15 dollars per hour and the already done part took
you 20 hours, charge 300 for that part. Then estimate how
much time will take you to make the new part and add it to
your set price. You should make the “easy” part as fast as possible, then concentrate on the unknown elements, and finally when you have finished the project core concentrate on the details. You will be able to show your customer the advance of the project and if something goes wrong in the later stages, as in many cases happen, you should have plenty of time to correct any fault since you have already done the easy part, which is the major component of the work. Time is another important consideration. Since part of the work will be done from scratch and probably will involve some kind of research it will take more time than if you have a previously done work and just modify it. It’s always better to establish a later deadline from the beginning than to ask for a time extension later. It will give a better impression to your customer if you finish on schedule (or before that), and will help bring more jobs for you. So be conservative when establishing your deadlines.
