by Chuck MullaneyEach of us has our "pluses and minuses" and in case you don't know, I'm a daily victim of ADD (attention deficit disorder)...sometimes a little ad'H'd -but I think that's more about caffeine intake than genetics... :-)
Since my parents didn't take me to the doctor for Ritalin and behavioral therapy as a child, not the first way to handle a kid with a low attention span in the 70's and 80's like it is now; I've really had to constantly question myself and keep revisiting my own actions to see if they were/are in disarray like they commonly are; no prescription drugs to help stay focused.
I'm certainly not looking for an, "Ahw, poor Chuck!" here. I'm letting you know that being humble about my personal drawbacks is Extremely important to my personal, and therefore my financial, success.Having said that, hopefully you can now see why I have to take "deep looks" into myself to discover why I've been so successful online to really give my clients what they need, "solid tools", rather than general or superficial tips for being an online winner.
One of my personal reasons for success has been effective networking and, since studying the networking pros after the fact (duh!), I've come to realize that the same thing that my Mother still tells everyone was a problem with me as a kid has been one of my most effective networking skills; "He's always been so open and friendly that I always had to keep a good eye on him". Her point was that it didn't dawn on me until very late in life that some people would actually try to harm me or use my open and friendly personality against me...
I recently did an interview for an extremely well compiled ebook called Networkaholics Revealed! True Confessions From People Who Networked Their Way to Success (And How You Can Do The Same)" by Bonnie Lowe. I highly recommend taking a good look at what each of the top networkers in this ebook with me had to say. There are many totally conflicting ways of succeeding at networking...
Bonnie had some questions that she gave to each of us featured in this killer resource that made me think long and hard about what works for me as a "networkaholic". I knew, but didn't really verbalize until this interview, that my biggest success in networking has not been referred sales; it's been the invaluable education that my friends (networking partners) have given me because I don't target them like a carnivore!
Whether you've been as successful as myself and some of the huge names that are in Bonnie's book with me, (like Joe Vitale or Fred Gleek or David Garfinkel or MANY other success machines....) or are just starting out on this endeavor; "Don't Overlook The Power Of Being a Friend First, Rather Than Just A Common 'Sale Hunter'!".
YOU have skills or personality traits that are not common, we all do, and handing them over to people you talk with each day(no strings attached) is MUCH more helpful to your ultimate success than determination to "make the sale" is; trust me on this!
Be nice, be helpful, and be accessible.
When a friend of the last person you spoke with (John, as an example) says, "Hey John, do you know anyone that sells (enter your product or service here)?"
Will John say no because he's afraid of "sicking" a marketing killer like you on his friend? OR Will John say, "You know what- I know this really helpful guy/girl (you) that knows something about that and he/she is real easy to talk to; here's his/her (your) phone number!"..?
That's the cold hard truth of this world. Don't reinvent it...
I was lucky (and unlucky sometimes) to be born this way, but there are several things that I implement into my daily work that I was not just born with, so you can make this way yours too! If you need to print this out and put the page in front of you while you're talking with people each day, Do It!
You can be certain of one thing for sure and that is that people will always be "human", we just can't help it...
Respectfully, Chuck Mullaney
